Nor'easter Blackouts Leave 100,000 in the Dark: Why White Mountains Homes Need a 12kW Solar Kit
Over 100,000 Lose Power in a Nor'easter While the Southwest Deals With Its Own Blackouts. Is Your Home Ready?
A slow-moving nor'easter hammered the Northeast this weekend. More than 100,000 customers across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and New England lost power as heavy rain, tidal flooding, and wind gusts knocked down trees and lines. Rhode Island alone peaked at more than 31,000 outages, and crews there were still working through the weekend. More than 250 flights were canceled at Boston Logan.
The Southwest has its own story. In El Paso, monsoon thunderstorms knocked out power to more than 8,000 customers on September 16, at least the fifth major blackout since August. An earlier August 1 storm hit roughly 17,000 customers and took down 11 poles. Different regions, different weather, same result: the lights go out, and everybody waits for a truck.

Outages Are Getting More Frequent, Not Less
Storms are only part of the problem. The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects record electricity use in 2026 and again in 2027, with AI data centers a major driver. More demand on the same aging wires means less margin when weather hits. Utilities are working on it. Homeowners should not have to wait for them to finish.
APS Rates: A 14 Percent Increase Is Still on the Table
Closer to home, the APS rate case is heading toward a decision. APS asked for about a 14 percent residential increase, roughly $20 more per month for the average household, and a 45 percent increase for data centers. The 31-day hearing ended July 7. The judge's recommendation is expected in late November, the Commission votes by December 31, and new rates are likely in early 2027, right as White Mountains homes run heat all winter.
Why White Mountains Homes Feel It First
Show Low, Snowflake-Taylor, Pinetop-Lakeside, Concho, Saint Johns, Vernon, White Mountain Lakes, and Shumway sit at the end of the line. When a storm takes down a pole or a substation fails, we are usually the last to get power back. Most homes here also run on private wells, so no power means no water. Winter ice and monsoon lightning are both real threats, and both can leave you waiting.
The 12kW Solar Kit: Whole-Home Power From White Mountains Solar
If you want more than a backup for the fridge, the 12kW solar kit from White Mountains Solar is built to run the house. It is a 12,000 watt hybrid inverter system paired with a lithium battery bank, and it is expandable. Start with the batteries and panels that fit your budget today, then add more later. When the grid goes down, the system switches over on its own. No generator, no fuel, no noise.
Pre-built, pre-programmed, pre-assembled, and tested in our Show Low shop before it leaves.
Ready to run on day one. DIY customers only connect the panels and batteries to the unit.
Expandable. Add batteries and panels as your needs and budget grow.
Backed by a local team that has sold and installed solar kits since 2009.
