The Grid Just Broke Its Own Record — Did Your AC Bill Break One Too?
The Grid Just Broke Its Own Record. Did Your AC Bill Break One Too?
After 17 straight days at or above 110°, APS customers pulled more electricity at once than ever before in company history. Every one of those record-setting hours fell in APS's most expensive pricing window.
APS Just Set an All-Time Demand Record, and It Happened This Month
On Saturday, July 15, 2026, after 17 consecutive days of temperatures at or above 110 degrees, APS customers pushed electricity demand to 8,191 megawatts, the single highest amount of power ever used at once in APS history. It is the third year in a row Arizona utilities have set new peak demand records, and APS is forecasting it will need at least 8,468 MW of capacity to meet customer demand before this summer is over.
| What Happened | Detail |
|---|---|
| 17-day heat streak | Temperatures at or above 110° across the APS service territory leading into mid-July 2026 |
| All-time peak demand record | 8,191 MW used at once on July 15, 2026 — the highest in APS history |
| 2026 forecast | APS expects to need at least 8,468 MW of capacity, plus 1,326 MW in reserve, before summer ends |
| Three-year trend | Third consecutive year Arizona utilities have set new peak demand records |

Why does this matter to you, specifically? Arizona summers are running longer and hotter every year, which stretches out the window where the grid is under maximum strain. That is also the exact window when APS's time-of-use pricing plans charge their highest per-kilowatt-hour rate, the mid-afternoon into evening hours when every air conditioner in the White Mountains is working overtime. A record demand day is not just a headline about the grid. It is a preview of what your meter is about to read.
A Record Grid Day Is Also Your Most Expensive Day
APS has brought more solar and storage online than ever, and it is still racing to keep pace with demand growth. Utilities across the state are now prepared to deliver a combined 24,500 MW to cover peak summer load, including emergency reserves. That is reassuring from a keeping-the-lights-on standpoint. It does nothing for your bill.
The homes and businesses running the hardest during a 110-degree stretch are, by definition, the ones paying APS's peak-hour rate the most hours of the day. Every degree the grid strains under, your air conditioner is straining right along with it, and both of you are being billed for it at the worst possible rate.

Solar Only Protects You From Peak Pricing If It Has a Battery
This is the part most homeowners get wrong. A standard grid-tied solar system without a battery still leaves you exposed during APS's peak pricing hours if your panels are not producing enough at that exact moment, and it offers zero protection if the grid itself trips during a heat-driven strain event. The only way to actually get out from under peak-hour pricing and grid strain at the same time is to pair solar with real battery storage that can shift your usage away from APS's most expensive hours and keep your home running if the grid hiccups.
Every White Mountains Solar kit is built that way from the start: real lithium battery storage, not panels alone.
The Kit We Recommend for Peak Summer AC Loads
For homes running central AC hard through a 110-degree stretch, the 12kW EG4 Basic is our most popular kit. It is sized to carry a full home's AC load through APS's peak pricing window without leaning on the grid.

Running a bigger home, a shop, or an electric well pump on top of AC? Ask us about stepping up to the 12kW EG4 Large (60.2 kWh storage) or the 24kW LUX SNA Dual (40.8 kWh storage, dual inverters). We size every kit around what you actually need running during the hottest hours of the day, not a generic package.

Battery-Backed by Default
Every kit we sell includes real lithium battery storage, so you can actually shift usage away from APS's peak-pricing hours instead of just watching the meter spin.
Sized to Your Actual AC Load
We ask what your home draws on a 110-degree afternoon before we size a kit. Guess wrong and you either overpay or run short exactly when you need power most.
