One Broken Line, 37,000 Homes in the Dark: Why September's Outages Make the Case for Solar Battery Backup

On Monday night, September 22, a transmission line problem at a substation north of Houston knocked out power to roughly 37,000 CenterPoint Energy customers across Tomball, Cypress, and Magnolia. One piece of equipment. Tens of thousands of homes. At 9:30 that night about 15,000 were still dark while 100 crews worked the repair.

It was not a one-off. On September 3, a helicopter crew clearing brush along railroad tracks damaged a transmission line in Wake County, North Carolina, and about 35,000 Duke Energy customers in Cary and Morrisville lost power in the middle of the afternoon. On September 20, more than 13,700 Hawaiian Electric customers from Aina Haina to Waimanalo went dark with the cause still under investigation. And earlier this month, more than 10,000 homes in North County San Diego lost power during a heat wave.

A Sol-Ark hybrid inverter install. When the grid drops, a system like this switches the house over on its own.

The Grid Has Single Points of Failure. Your Home Does Not Have To.

Different states. Different utilities. Same lesson. Huge sections of the grid depend on a handful of transmission lines and substations. When one fails, everyone downstream loses power at once, and there is nothing a homeowner can do but wait. Solar battery backup flips that around. Your panels make power on your roof, your batteries store it, and your hybrid inverter keeps the house running the moment the grid goes down.

Power Demand Is Hitting Records While the Grid Plays Catch-Up

In its September Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration projected record electricity use in 2026 and again in 2027, with AI data centers as a primary driver. In Texas, data centers make up roughly 90 percent of the 474 gigawatts of new capacity requests waiting to connect to the grid. Texas has paused approvals for new large-load facilities while it figures out how to keep up.

Arizona is feeling the same squeeze. APS customers set the utility's all-time peak demand record twice this summer, driven by extreme heat, population growth, and new data centers. More demand on the same wires means more stress on the lines that feed rural towns at the end of the system.

The APS Rate Case Decision Is Two Months Away

The APS rate case is heading into its final stretch. APS asked regulators for about a 14 percent increase, plus a new formula rate that would allow yearly adjustments. The 31-day hearing wrapped up July 7. The administrative law judge's recommendation is expected by late November, the Commission must vote by December 31, and new rates would likely take effect in early 2027. Every kilowatt hour your own panels produce is one you never have to buy at the new price.

Why White Mountains Homes Need Solar Battery Backup

Show Low, Snowflake-Taylor, Pinetop-Lakeside, Concho, Saint Johns, Vernon, White Mountain Lakes, and Shumway sit at the far end of the line. When a substation fails, or a monsoon storm or winter ice brings down a line, rural outages often last longer and restoration comes later. Most homes up here also run on private wells. No power means no water pressure. Add freezers, heating fans, medical devices, and a home office, and a few hours without power turns into a real problem fast.

Solar Battery Backup Kits Built in Show Low, From Starter to Whole Home

Our solar battery backup kits are pre-built, pre-programmed, pre-assembled, and tested in our Show Low shop before they leave. They arrive ready to run on day one. DIY customers only connect the panels and batteries to the unit. Pick the size that fits your home and budget:

  • Starter kits that keep the well pump, fridge, lights, and internet running through an outage.

  • The 6kW EG4 full kit with 4 lithium batteries and 16 panels for a strong essentials-plus system.

  • 12kW expandable kits that run most of the house and grow as you add batteries and panels.

  • 24kW whole-property systems for large homes, shops, and guest houses.

  • Hybrid inverters on their own for technical DIY builders, plus new and used solar panels for a lower cost way to get started.
